A significant portion of the couples we photograph at Banff, Lake Louise, and Moraine Lake are from somewhere else entirely: Texas, California, the UK, Australia, Japan. They’ve seen the photographs. They’ve done the research. They’ve made the decision that the Canadian Rockies are worth a flight. They are right. Here’s everything they need to know to actually pull it off.
Why international and out-of-province couples choose the Canadian Rockies
The honest answer: there is nowhere else on earth that looks like this. The specific combination of turquoise glacial lakes, dramatic stone peaks, and accessible wilderness, within driving distance of a proper international airport, is essentially unique to the Alberta Rockies. Banff and Lake Louise in particular have an international recognition that draws couples who want something genuinely extraordinary rather than merely beautiful.
We’ve photographed couples from every continent at these locations. The ones who plan well have some of the best days of their lives. The ones who underestimate the logistics have harder days than they needed to. This guide is for the former.
The legal requirements for getting married in Canada
Getting legally married in Canada as a non-Canadian is entirely possible and relatively straightforward — but it requires preparation. Here’s the framework:
MARRIAGE LICENCE
In Alberta, a marriage licence is issued by the provincial government and must be obtained before the ceremony. As a non-Canadian resident, you need to apply for an Alberta marriage licence, which requires:
- Valid government-issued photo ID (passport works)
- Proof of any previous marriages being dissolved (if applicable)
- Both parties present at the time of application (in Alberta this can sometimes be done in advance by mail or with an agent — check current Alberta government requirements)
The licence is valid for 3 months from issue and costs approximately $30–50. There is no waiting period in Alberta, you can apply and marry on the same trip.
MARRIAGE COMMISSIONER OR OFFICIANT
You need an Alberta-licensed marriage commissioner or registered religious officiant to perform the ceremony. We work closely with several commissioners who specialise in destination weddings and elopements, including international couples. We can connect you with them directly.
WITNESSES
Two witnesses are required for a legal marriage in Alberta. If you’re eloping with just the two of you, your photographer and officiant can typically serve as witnesses. Confirm this with your specific commissioner in advance.
FOR US COUPLES SPECIFICALLY
American citizens do not need a visa to visit Canada for tourism — your passport is sufficient. You can marry legally in Canada and the marriage will be recognised in the US. You do not need to file anything special in the US upon return — your Alberta marriage certificate, translated if necessary, serves as your legal marriage document. We recommend confirming specifics with your state of residence as requirements vary slightly.
Planning your vendor team from a distance
The biggest challenge for destination couples is building a vendor team without being able to meet people in person. Here’s how to do it well:
START WITH YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER
Your photographer is the vendor you’ll spend the most time with on the day. For destination couples especially, working with a photographer you genuinely connect with makes an enormous difference. We do video consultations with every destination couple we work with — not a sales call, a real conversation about who you are, what you’re building, and how we work. By the time your day arrives, we should feel like people you know, not strangers with cameras.
USE A LOCAL WEDDING PLANNER FOR VENUE AND VENDOR COORDINATION
For destination weddings with more than 10–15 guests, we strongly recommend working with a local Calgary or Banff-based wedding planner. They know the vendors, the venues, the permit requirements, and the logistics in a way that saves you hours of research and prevents expensive mistakes. We work regularly with excellent planners in the area and are happy to make introductions.
BOOK YOUR VENUE BEFORE YOUR DATE
This sounds obvious but the sequencing matters: venue first, then vendors. The Fairmont Banff Springs, Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise, and Emerald Lake Lodge all have specific date availability that drives everything else. Lock your venue, then build around it.
The Parks Canada permit reality
If you’re planning any photography in Banff or Yoho National Park — which for most destination couples is the whole point — your photographer needs a Parks Canada Commercial Photography and Filming permit. We obtain this permit for every couple we work with. It is included in our packages. You never think about it.
What couples do need to handle themselves: a valid Parks Canada Discovery Pass (annual pass) or day pass for vehicle entry into the national park. This can be purchased online before your trip or at the park gate. In peak summer, purchasing in advance saves significant time.
Logistics: getting here and getting around
GETTING TO BANFF
Calgary International Airport (YYC) is your hub. It’s served by direct flights from most major US cities, the UK, and other international hubs. From the airport, Banff is approximately 90 minutes by car. Car rental is available at the airport. Several shuttle services also run between YYC and Banff town — Banff Airporter and Brewster Express are the main operators.
GETTING AROUND BANFF
Within Banff townsite, the Roam public transit system is excellent and free or low-cost. For popular locations like Moraine Lake and Lake Louise in summer, visitor access is managed by Parks Canada shuttles — private vehicles are restricted at peak times. We plan all portrait logistics around this and ensure you’re never surprised by access restrictions.
ACCOMMODATION
Book accommodation as early as possible — particularly for summer and fall larch season. The Fairmont Banff Springs and Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise are the marquee choices and book a year or more in advance. Excellent alternatives include the Rimrock Resort (Banff), Buffalo Mountain Lodge (Banff), Post Hotel (Lake Louise), and the many excellent boutique hotels in Canmore (more availability, 20 minutes from Banff).
What destination couples consistently tell us
After photographing hundreds of destination couples, the feedback we hear most consistently: they wished they’d planned more time here. A single day in Banff for a wedding is survivable. Two or three days — arriving a day before, having a wedding day, spending one more day in the mountains before flying home — is transformative. The Rockies deserve more than a rushed stopover.
