The Moments That Matter Most in Your Calgary Wedding Photos

We’re nearing the end of Thanksgiving weekend here in the Heidrich home and I’ve been thinking a lot about how the moments that really matter most in life are the ones spent connecting with our loved ones. About how our best memories grow simply from our being and doing life together one moment at a time, and that those individual moments (regardless of whether mundane or outstanding)string together over the years to become our lifetime of memories together. Isn’t it so beautiful? This got me reflecting on how your Calgary wedding photos play such a vital role in preserving the emotions and cherished memories from your wedding.

It just so happens that every year around this time is typically when our wedding season is beginning to wrap up. It’s the time of year where my mind and eyes are bombarded (in the absolute best, most beautiful ways) with endless images of moments from our weddings this season, and inevitably, it creates this sentimental nostalgia that I love to linger on. I love it because it warms my heart with the beauty and significance of the why behind what David and I do as wedding photographers. We been invited and trusted to tell the visual stories of families coming together in joyful celebration. Sometimes I have to pinch myself to believe that this is the job we’ve been gifted to do for over the years, capturing wedding moments Calgary couples will treasure.

It’s the father clutching his baby girl’s hand as he walks her down the aisle, all the while visualizing each year of her growing up into the amazing woman she is today. It’s the groom seeing his gorgeous bride for the first time, with welled eyes and full heart. It’s the grandma who’s wisdom and love radiates through her smiling eyes, and the blessing of each year of her lingering presence with the family. It’s both mothers beaming at the wonderful couple their children have become, while also dreaming of the grandbabies they’ll get to dote upon. It’s the beloved family and friends, from all chapters of life, beautifully colliding in the same room together for the first (and probably only) time ever. All those hand squeezes. Single tears rolling down the cheek. Bear hugs. Stories shared with laughter. Glasses clinked in cheers. Capturing wedding moments for Calgary couples like these is truly what drives our story telling.

Your wedding photos are a joyous, intimate, enduring collection of the moments that matter most. Your wedding photos are so much more than poses. Our documentation of your wedding day all begins with collecting the moments, from a slight touch of the hand to the epic party, and stringing them all together to tell your story, full of emotion & authenticity and wrapped up in the most timeless, enduring way.

Everyone will tell you to “make sure you book a good photographer so you have good Calgary wedding photos!” when you get engaged and begin the process of planning your wedding. And while this is true (I mean, you only need to talk to one friend who has had a horrible experience and is unhappy with their wedding photos to understand and value the work of an experienced photographer), it is only a part of the story. What they should really be saying is to “find a photographer who will immerse themselves into your wedding celebration seamlessly, with professionalism and intentionality, as well as caring hospitality so that your photos can become a timeless, enduring collection of the emotional essence of your Calgary wedding day.”

After 14 years of photographing wedding celebrations, working with couples, their families and closest friends, my heart is full to overflowing when I think about the stories we’ve been honoured to tell through photographs. Parallel to these years, I also can’t help but reflect personally on how David and I have grown from young newlyweds, into parents, and now are in a stage of raising an incredible 7 & 9yr old who will be out in the world on their own before I know it – and it’s really in my face about how fast time really does go by. It’s bittersweet, as time can feel like a thief, but it’s also incredibly rewarding, because when you take the time to enjoy little moments in life with the people who matter most, it becomes a joyful journey. And through our personal journey, we’ve grown in the way we approach documenting weddings to have more intention, observation of connection and with an enduring perspective.

Your Calgary wedding photos are the portraits that will tell the stories you want to relive again and again over the years. These are the photos that will keep memories alive for generations to come. And these are the kind of photos that propel the why of everything we do, from our communication and processes, to the quality heirloom art we offer, from how we work as a team with other vendors to treating your family and friends as our own family and friends. In fact, just this summer, we were reminded of why we take the care we do in documenting your important people. One of our couple’s from last year had their grandpa pass away. A second couple (who were married only this past summer), had a grandma fall ill. In both of these couples’ weddings, we photographed them with these grandparents. And for both of these couples, these captured connections with each of their grandparents means the world to them.

As I draw to a close, I wanted to point out that the portraits you’ve been looking at throughout this blog post are not just happy, emotional or intimate moments from a random wedding day. They represent generations of story-telling through a simple moment frozen in time. And for each of these weddings, they have the power to bring a flood of cherished memories when couples look back through their wedding day photographs. It’s the most incredible phenomenon that portraits can produce, and throughout the practice of remembering the joyful, beautiful things in life, it creates a well of gratitude that spills over into everything. How fitting a reflection on Thanksgiving weekend. Life is beautiful.
